Although the North Vietnamese are limited to one type of artillery, it proves itself effective compared to their Southern counterparts, as the improvised artillery barrage is mixed with artillery, rockets, and white phosphorus and has a lethal radius up to 50-70 meters; when using this, the Commander must be wise and considerate about it, that since it covers a large radius and is lethal to any infantry caught under it, but is large enough to put infantry in danger. As said previously communication is very important, so giving awareness to allies about an improvised artillery barrage may prevent enemies. The purpose of this artillery both includes wiping out the enemy in a certain area and cutting off the enemy's access to the objective. The Commander calls in support abilities through radios scattered around the map and coordinates the movements of the team to capture or defend objectives. They should know where their Radiomen are, the location of the closest static radio, and communicate with their Squad Leaders to place artillery marks. If all of their radio abilities are on cooldown, they should enter the fight.
Gameplay Details
The North Vietnam Commander has access to a variety of commander abilities involving guerrilla warfare compared to their counterparts and has the power to lead their team as well as direct and advise them. The Commander although is not effective independently, and must learn how to communicate with their team and cooperate to achieve the best outcome of a battle. During gameplay, the Commander's actions can reflect on the outcome of the battle, including his leadership as well as how effectively he uses his commander abilities; an effective Commander knows how to lead his team as well as perfectly timing and positioning their attacks. A poor Commander is likely to have a lack of communication with his team and conducts mistakes that result in the loss of a battle.
The Commander has a variety of abilities, such as marking artillery, suggesting objectives to defend or attack, and calling in support. The Commander can call for support using a stationary radio or a radioman nearby. When using the radio or checking the map, any artillery marks placed by a Squad Leader or the Commander will appear on the map, allowing the Commander to select a fire support command in which they desire to use; the support the North Vietnamese Commander can request include improvised artillery barrage, Ho Chi Minh trail, SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles), ground scout reconnaissance, and ambush. Each of these fire support commands can turn the tides of the battle depending on how effectively used and timed they are.
One of the most important abilities a Commander has access to is cancelling a fire support command; when situations involving support occur in which friendly casualties will or are occurring, or preventing progression, cancelling is important as it can prevent any further injuries towards the team. Any active artillery will be cancelled on the next salvo upon request. If there is a careless or unattended fire support commands, it has the possibility to kill friendlies or prevent the team from progressing such as attempting to defend or capture an objective.
Understanding Commander Abilities
SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles) have the ability to shoot down any form of aircraft above 75 meters in the air, although should be called in wisely, as it could be wasted on little to nothing along with cooldown, allowing the enemy South Vietnam Commander to call in other aerial support; in most preferred situations, a SAM should be called when dealing with a Spooky, as they predictable and is a threat to the North Vietnamese.
Ambush not only force respawns every dead player, but they all respawn on the Commander. This can be strategically used in objective based gamemodes like Supremacy and Territories, as the Commander can quite literally ambush significant positions with a wave of infantry. Ambush can overthrow a contested objective being attacked or defended, and sometimes can even outnumber the enemy's ratio; this is only effective if there is a large available wave of infantry waiting to be respawned. Ambush should be used wisely as carelessly using can cause plenty of issues; one of the biggest mistakes North Vietnamese Commanders make is using ambush while far away from the front usually at spawn, slowing down those with a squad tunnel trying to attack or defend an objective.
Ho Chi Minh trail decreases the amount of time people respawn, and can be vital in situations in which an objective is being contested. Ground scout reconnaissance are reports of enemy locations around the area. When calling in recon, the Commander can use this to request artillery on certain locations of exposed enemies; the team can also take advantage of the opportunity when checking their maps, by attacking suspected areas infested with enemies, or allowing Squad Leaders to provide good artillery marks for their commander. The Commander should always be next to a radio when calling recon, as it will not appear on the map if they are too far away from the radio. Unlike their Southern counterparts, the scout reconnaissance cannot be disturbed by the enemy.
