The machine guns in Rising Storm 2 have a unique mechanic that does not affect other weapons. When firing for extended periods of time the barrels of firearms will heat up significantly. This can adversely affect accuracy and, if the heat builds up sufficiently, can destroy the barrel of the gun. Only machine guns are affected by barrel overheating in Rising Storm 2.

Every round fired out of an MG will increase the heat of the barrel and every second spent not firing decreases the heat. As the barrel heats up it will produce more smoke and heat waves. If barrel heat has increased sufficiently the player will receive a prompt that the barrel is heating up too much. Continued firing will result in destruction of the barrel and massively decreased accuracy.
