Suppression is a mechanic that causes a player to become less combat effective when being suppressed. All guns and explosives produce some amount of suppression, some more so than others. As a rule of thumb, explosives suppress the most, followed by large-caliber rifles, intermediate caliber rifles, followed by everything else. Every round or explosive that goes off near a player will increase their level of suppression. As suppression increases, the player's vision will blur and their weapon will sway more, making it difficult to engage the enemy. Putting rounds or explosives close to the enemy will suppress them more quickly.

Machine guns are one of the best ways to suppress the enemy. While most rifles have the potential to suppress, they simply don't have the ammo capacity or the suppression power to sufficiently keep enemies suppressed for very long. Machine guns typically have large ammunition capacities and high suppression power along with bipods to increase their accuracy in full-auto, allowing them to easily keep enemies from shooting back.
